About Us

Australian Animal Rescue Incorporated (AAR) is a non‑profit, volunteer‑run, non‑government organisation committed to rescuing, rehabilitating, and protecting animals across Victoria. Established in April 2009 following the devastating bushfires that swept through Gippsland, Kinglake and Marysville, AAR began with a small group of dedicated volunteers who spent months rescuing wildlife and delivering essential food and supplies to affected communities.

What started as an emergency response has grown into a year‑round service. Unlike many rescue groups, AAR specialises in both wildlife and domestic animal rescue, rehabilitation and adoption—ensuring every animal in need has access to safety, care and a second chance.

Our Purpose

  • To provide direct care, sanctuary, veterinary treatment, triage, a wildlife hospital and other services, offering both short‑ and long‑term care for animals in need—whether sick, injured, stray, orphaned, abandoned, neglected or victims of cruelty.

  • To support the recovery of sick or injured native wildlife and all other animals.

  • To rehome rehabilitated domestic animals into suitable permanent homes, and to release rehabilitated wildlife back into safe, appropriate bushland environments.

  • To maintain a skilled and specialised animal emergency rescue service for the South Eastern suburbs, Mornington Peninsula and surrounding areas.

  • To assist other animal shelters by sharing volunteers, equipment, information and supplies whenever possible.

  • To provide education programs focused on animal welfare, along with conservation programs for a range of ages and community groups.

  • To develop and maintain a gift fund dedicated to raising money for veterinary costs, equipment and essential supplies.

  • To provide disaster relief throughout Australia whenever animals are in need.

AAR operates seven days a week, offering rescue services, community support and animal welfare information across Victoria. We also assist other shelters and disaster‑relief efforts by fundraising throughout Melbourne.
