Rescuers save duck after nail attack - (Click to Open/Close)

Nigel received a call on Monday the the 28th Sept about a wood duck that had a nail in its head at the Tallyho Business Park in Burwood. Nigel spent just over 6 hours trying to capture the wild duck but was unsuccessful.

Returning on the Tuesday to resume the rescue, Nigel was unable to find the duck, however in the case of third time lucky, the duck was captured late on Wednesday night. Once caught it was obvious that this was an act of cruelty and that someone had fired a nail gun at the duck penetrating through the ducks head, narrowly missing his eye.

Tally as he was named was taken to the Green Cross Vets in Rowville where vets stayed after hours to save this lucky ducks life. Tally is expected to make a full recovery and will be released back to the park.

Nigel rescued this cockatoo 60ft up a tree after being caught up by its wing with a piece of string.

A vet nurse from Greencross Vet clinic was called on to help remove the string and treat his wounded wing.

The cockatoo was extremely lucky on this occasion as he did not receive any breaks to the wing and just sustained bruising and grazing. The cockatoo was kept in rehabilitation for 1 week then released back into the wilderness in his natural habitat.

A lot of ducklings get orphaned each year, either from parents being killed on the road, or when they are found in backyard swimming pools. So far for Sept 2009 Sharon and the volunteers have raised 18, Just in time for them to go into our brand new specially designed enclosure, with a easy to clean concrete pond and plenty of natural area to frolic in.

Nigel was called out by residents in the Mt Waverley area, they had seen a domestic duck on their local lake with a extremely swollen leg.

Nigel soon had the duck caught and discovered a shoe lace wrapped tightly around its leg. Nike as he was called was taken back to our shelter where Sharon and her Mum Maria removed the tightly embedded shoelace, and treated the deep wound.

Nike made a full recovery with all the swelling gone down completely after 3 weeks he was then released onto our dam to meet and befriend the resident ducks.
